Refugees

In their IL class this year, the grade 9 students have been learning about various definitions of peace. This week the focus has been on the situation in various countries internationally and this Wednesday two guests visited our school to talk about refugees.

The first guest had us imagine what our lives would be like if we lost the things we value the most. We were able to imagine what life must be like for refugees and then learn a little about the reality.

The second guest, from the UNHCR, showed us the scale of the global refugee situation and cleared up some misconceptions about refugees, explaining that they are a normal cross-section of society and just like us.

The students had a lot to think about as a result of the guests’ speeches, but we hope they will keep the lessons in mind so they can live up to the Gakuin motto of “Men For Others, With Others.”
