【動】Sports Festival
This morning when I came to school I saw a new poster outside the teacher’s room.

Looking at this poster I was wondering if this year’s Sports Festival would involve a collaboration with Asa Zoo.

Then I read the title – 動. I’m an English teacher, so when I see the kanji 「動」 my first thought is “verb” (動詞).
However, the sports festival committee gave a digital presentation via YouTube to the students at lunch time today, clarifying my misunderstanding.
This year’s theme is… 動 …from the sports festival committee.
The committee chairperson explained that 動 means to keep moving and be actively involved, but that it isn’t limited to just the day of the sports festival. Even before the festival, there is a lot of preparation so everyone needs to participate fully. I thought about this and decided the best translation into English would probably be “dynamic”.
Of course, Hiroshima is currently still under an emergency declaration, so some things are still uncertain about the future of the sports festival. However, we hope that the situation in society will continue to improve so our boys will be able to enjoy this important event safely.
